The Challenge

From passive health tracking to a motivating ecosystem

Transform an existing wellness experience from passive health tracking into a more engaging ecosystem that motivates users to build healthier habits through challenges, goals, progress tracking, streaks, leaderboards, badges, points, and rewards. The experience also needed to scale beyond a single challenge, allowing administrators to configure, manage, and publish multiple wellness challenges for different audiences.

01

Understand & Define

Turning complex business requirements into an experience strategy. I worked closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, and key stakeholders to translate the business requirements and information architecture into clear experience principles and product journeys.

Ecosystem journey

Discover → Enroll → Participate → Track Progress → Compete → Earn → Complete

In parallel, we identified the administrative workflows required to operate and scale the ecosystem.

My Contribution
02

Research & Benchmarking

Understanding successful gamification patterns. We conducted competitive and UX benchmarking across wellness, fitness, loyalty, and gamification products to understand how established platforms motivate sustained participation.

We explored patterns around
Challenge discovery & enrollment Goal visualization Progress & completion Streak mechanics Leaderboards & social motivation Badges & achievements Points & rewards User feedback & motivational states

The research helped us identify patterns that could be adapted to a healthcare context while keeping the experience simple, trustworthy, and motivating.

03

Experience Architecture

Mapping the ecosystem before designing screens. Using the information architecture and business rules provided by Product and Business Analysis, we translated complex requirements into end-to-end user flows and experience diagrams.

Mapped relationship

Challenge Discovery → Eligibility → Enrollment → Goal Tracking → Scoring → Streaks → Leaderboard → Challenge Completion

This stage helped us identify dependencies, decision points, edge cases, and system states before moving into detailed interface design.

UX Design & Wireframing

Turning complex rules into simple interactions. Once the journeys were validated, we translated them into high-fidelity wireframes covering the core experience.

Integration

Daily goal progress is tracked automatically through native integration with Apple Health and Google Fit — removing manual logging as a barrier to consistent, day-to-day participation.

The focus was not simply on displaying information, but on helping users understand: What should I do? → How am I progressing? → What have I achieved? → What happens next?

UI & Design System

Building within the TAMM ecosystem. After validating the experience structure, we translated the approved UX into high-fidelity interfaces using the TAMM Design System — working within an established government design ecosystem while introducing new gamification patterns and components.

Admin Experience

Designing the system behind the user experience. The solution could not depend on designing a new experience every time a wellness challenge was launched, so I extended the work beyond the consumer experience into an Admin Challenge Management experience.

Admin workflow

Create → Configure → Target → Manage → Publish → Monitor

Configurable challenge parameters
Challenge information & duration Target audiences Wellness goals & thresholds Scoring rules Streak configurations Rewards Winning criteria Publishing & challenge status

This transformed the design challenge from a single campaign experience into a scalable wellness gamification platform.

Design Leadership

Leading the experience across a team of 4 designers. My responsibility extended beyond individual design execution — I led a team of 4 designers across the experience, establishing the design direction, distributing work across different journeys, reviewing outputs, resolving experience inconsistencies, and ensuring the final product worked as one coherent ecosystem.

I also acted as a bridge between Design, Product, Business Analysis, and technical stakeholders, helping translate complex requirements into experiences that were understandable for users and feasible for implementation.

The Solution

From a single wellness challenge to a scalable engagement ecosystem

The resulting experience establishes a scalable gamification layer around wellness — connecting health goals, behavioral motivation, progress, competition, recognition, and rewards within one coherent ecosystem. Rather than designing isolated screens, we created an experience architecture capable of supporting multiple challenge models and future wellness initiatives.

Discover → Join → Participate → Progress → Compete → Achieve → Earn User Experience
Create → Configure → Target → Publish → Manage → Measure Operational Experience
Design Impact

Moving wellness from passive tracking to an active, community-driven model

Scalable end-to-end experience

A complete wellness gamification experience, not a single campaign.

Journeys across complex rules

Defined journeys across complex business and platform rules.

Reusable UX patterns

Built for future wellness challenges, not just this one.

TAMM-aligned UI

Fully aligned with the TAMM Design System.

Scalable admin model

An administrative model for managing multiple challenges.

Unified experience

Connects user-facing and operational workflows as one system.

Foundation for what's next

A design foundation capable of supporting future gamification capabilities.
